Why Volkswagen 4Motion AWD is Changing the Auto Industry
When shopping for a new vehicle, the drivetrain that powers your wheels is one of the most important aspects influencing your decisions. Four-wheel drive models are prevalent, as they have grown with the explosive popularity of the SUV market. That being said, there are differences among AWD models of different manufacturers, and one of the ones that stands above the others is the 4Motion AWD system from Volkswagen.
What Is 4Motion from Volkswagen?
VW 4Motion is a four-wheel-drive system that sends power to both the front and rear axles instead of just one axle that we would find on the front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive vehicles. These models are prominent because they provide more traction and allow you to grip the road during poor weather conditions. These drivetrains have some downsides, mostly the increased cost and slightly lower fuel efficiency, but many view it as worth the added security of traction control.
The Volkswagen 4Motion system comes in two different variations, the Haldex and the Torsen:
- Haldex: Applies 90% of power to the front wheels the majority of the time, only applying power to the rear wheels when necessary. This power distribution is controlled by an electronic clutch which senses when your vehicle needs assistance. Haldex is typically found on hatchbacks and smaller SUV Volkswagen models.
- Torsen: Maintains a balance of 50/50 of power to both axles, which provides a smooth driving experience. When needed, the Torsen system will increase the power to the rear axle, allowing drivers to escape slippery situations. This model of the 4Motion system is found on larger SUVs and performance cars.
The 4Motion system is unique when it comes to the Haldex model, as it only applies power to the rear when needed, which can help conserve power. This also makes the 4Motion slightly more efficient than traditional all-wheel drive systems.
